The Lake Merritt Bay Area Rapid Transit station is located in Downtown Oakland, in the U.S. state of California on Oak Street near Lake Merritt, Chinatown, Laney College and the Oakland Museum. This station consists of an underground island platform. Service at this station began on September 11, 1972.〔(BART History )〕 The BART headquarters was located in a building on top of the station; due to potential risk of earthquake, the headquarters was moved out of the building to leased space on the first floor of the Kaiser Center, ¾ mile away (1,200 m).
